The Champakulam Boat Race 2026 is one of the oldest and most prestigious snake boat races in Kerala, held on the serene waters of the Pamba River in Alappuzha district. This traditional water festival marks the beginning of Kerala’s boat race season and is deeply rooted in history, culture, and local heritage.
Celebrated on the Moolam day of the Malayalam month of Mithunam (June–July), the race is associated with centuries-old traditions linked to the installation of the idol at the Ambalappuzha Sree Krishna Temple. The event begins with religious rituals, vibrant cultural processions, and festive gatherings, followed by the thrilling snake boat competitions that attract thousands of spectators from across the world.
The highlight of the festival is the majestic Chundan Vallams (snake boats), rowed in perfect synchronization by teams of skilled oarsmen chanting traditional boat songs (Vanchipattu). The rhythmic rowing, cheering crowds, and festive atmosphere create a powerful and unforgettable spectacle that reflects Kerala’s rich cultural identity.
Beyond the race itself, Champakulam transforms into a vibrant celebration zone with cultural performances, traditional music, food stalls, and community participation. It is not just a sporting event but a symbol of unity, tradition, and the spirit of Kerala’s backwaters.
